Shutter & Paper

I believe that one of the key parts of shooting film, is the wait between pressing the shutter release and having the negatives in hand. That is where this work comes from, the waiting period.

I am often inspired to write about images but with ‘Shutter & Paper’ I wrote my poetry before seeing the image, purely based on a memory of what the shot would look like, or what I hoped it would look like.

This writing encapsulated how I felt in the moment of taking the photo or it could have been sparked by a memory some time later. There are themes that run through all of these pieces, both in the imagery and literature.

This has also given life to images that otherwise may have fallen to the wayside due to imperfections such as light leaks or lack of focus etc... ‘Shutter & Paper’ takes them beyond those imperfections, back to when they were just memories.
